Parazaider leaves behind a surviving wife of 59 years, JacLynn, alongside family, bandmates, and millions of fans who remember his pioneering contributions to American rock music.

Born on March 14, 1945, Parazaider was the driving force behind Chicago’s signature sound. In 1967, he teamed up with Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Danny Seraphine with a bold vision: to integrate a prominent horn section into a traditional rock band lineup. As his bandmates later noted, the concept of a “rock and roll band with horns” was entirely Walt’s idea, and without his vision, the group’s iconic music might never have existed.

Beyond his conceptual vision, Parazaider played a critical leadership role in the band’s early years by helping to organize rehearsals, secure performances, and guide the group through periods of uncertainty. He was also a master woodwind player whose work on saxophone, flute, and clarinet gave Chicago its rich, sophisticated texture. His flute performance on “Color My World” and soprano saxophone playing on “Just You ‘n’ Me” remain defining highlights of the band’s extensive catalog.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Parazaider helped propel Chicago to massive global success with timeless hits like “If You Leave Me Now,” “You’re the Inspiration,” and “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”. The band’s enduring influence and innovative blend of rock and brass were officially recognized in 2016 when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
