Goldie Hawn’s Honest Cataract Confession

Goldie Hawn has been lighting up our screens for decades, and she still brings that same sparkle wherever she goes. Recently, though, she opened up about dealing with cataracts, and that revelation drew even more attention after a touching moment at the 2025 Oscars with Andrew Garfield. While presenting an award together, Andrew became emotional as he shared how much his late mom loved Goldie and how Goldie’s work brought joy into her life. In the middle of this, Goldie quietly admitted she couldn’t read the teleprompter because of her cataracts, even saying, “I’m completely blind. I am I’ve got the cataracts.” The vulnerable exchange unfolded in front of millions and highlighted how common cataracts become as people age.
The condition occurs when the lens of the eye turns cloudy, first causing subtle changes and eventually making things look blurry, washing out colors and making bright lights uncomfortable. Reading or driving at night can become difficult, and Goldie’s situation reflects what many older adults experience. Health organizations report that around 17 percent of people globally live with cataracts, and more than half of people over 80 in the United States have them or will develop them. Cataracts can appear at any age, including in babies, or arise from injuries or health conditions, but the reassuring news is that they are highly treatable. A relatively quick surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear one, often leading to major improvements in vision. Other well-known figures such as Claude Monet, Mila Kunis, Larry King, and Savannah Guthrie have also faced cataracts or related surgery, underscoring how widespread the issue is. Through it all, Goldie continues to show up with warmth and humor, and her openness about cataracts offers a relatable glimpse into a health challenge many people share.
