vAfter buying a used desk for $40, I discovered an envelope hidden inside containing $800 in cash and a faded photograph of a little girl. I called the previous owner to return the money, but she insisted I keep it. Four days later, a police officer appeared at my door at 3 a.m. and explained that the woman had been hospitalized with chest pains and had saved my number because she trusted me. When I went to see her in the hospital, the plain envelope, the photograph, and the unexpected money took on an entirely new meaning.

At the hospital, the woman told me that the photograph was of her daughter, who had passed away at seven years old. The $800 was money she had spent years saving for her daughter’s headstone, until grief and loneliness eventually made her give up on completing it. Knowing I had called just to return a stranger’s money, she had held on to my number and asked the police officer to contact me when she became ill. I stayed with her until her sister arrived, and before I left, I promised to help her finally arrange the headstone once she recovered. What began as a simple attempt to do the right thing over a forgotten envelope in a used desk became the start of a meaningful friendship and a clear reminder that a small act of kindness can mean everything to someone who feels forgotten.
