Pumpkin’s Hidden Identity

That pumpkin on your doorstep is hiding a botanical twist. You may carve it, roast it, or bake it into a treasured family pie, but its familiar place among vegetables tells only half the story. Beneath that tough rind lies the surprising reason this beloved symbol of fall belongs to a category you might never have thought to suspect. A pumpkin is botanically a fruit—and, more specifically, a type of berry called a pepo. It develops from a flower’s ovary, forming a tough outer rind around fleshy tissue that holds the seeds, and those traits explain its scientific classification, even if the word “berry” usually makes people picture strawberries or blueberries instead of something large enough to carve.

Pumpkins sit within the cucurbit family, grouped with squash, cucumbers, and melons, and their identity comes from how they grow rather than how sweet they taste. Yet in the kitchen, it remains natural to treat pumpkin as a vegetable. Culinary labels follow flavor, preparation, and tradition, not botanical rules, and pumpkin slips easily into savory soups, roasted side dishes, and comforting autumn meals while also starring in beloved sweet pies. These two ways of seeing pumpkin do not contradict each other: it is both a botanical fruit and a culinary vegetable at the same time. The familiar harvest favorite simply carries more than one identity beneath its unmistakable rind.
