“Dad, Can We Please Go?”..

When I first met my now-wife, her three-year-old daughter quickly became incredibly important to me. As our relationship grew, so did the bond between us, and by the time she was four, she had started calling me “Dad.” Although her biological father comes and goes from her life, she has always called both of us Dad, even using his first name when she is around my wife and me.

One night, while she was visiting her biological father, she fell from a skateboard and badly injured her arm. Instead of taking her pain seriously, he reportedly dismissed it as her simply “being dramatic.” Frightened and hurting, she reached out to me and asked me to come get her.

When I arrived, she begged, “Dad, can we please go? I’m in a lot of pain.” I immediately took her to the emergency room, where doctors confirmed that she had actually broken her arm. I stayed beside her through the night, making sure she was comfortable and supported until around 1 a.m.

That night reminded me that being a real dad has little to do with biology and everything to do with being there when a child needs you. It means listening when they say something is wrong, believing them when they are afraid or hurting, and showing up without hesitation. Sometimes, the strongest bonds are built not by blood, but through love, trust and simply being there.
