Am I Their Daughter or Just Their Personal ATM?

I’m single and childless by choice, and I earn enough to live comfortably. The rest of my family isn’t struggling, but they aren’t nearly as well-off as I am. Over the years, I’ve paid for family vacations, home renovations, and even debts for my parents, my sister, and her family. I love them, but I’m exhausted from constantly being their financial safety net.

Recently, my parents asked me to pay for their dream cruise. It was extremely expensive, and for once, I said no. My mother became furious and yelled, “Why can’t you spend this much? Can’t you give us a gift? We spent so much money on your education. You don’t have a husband or children, so what do you need all that money for?”

Her words left me shocked and deeply hurt. I had already spent thousands helping them, yet they acted as though my money automatically belonged to them. I couldn’t understand why being single and childless meant I was expected to spend my savings on everyone else. For the first time, I seriously wondered whether my family saw me as a daughter—or simply as their personal ATM.

I’m angry and tempted to cut them off completely, but I also wonder if I should try to explain my feelings and set firm financial boundaries instead. My family may not be entitled to my money simply because I have more of it, and helping them should be a choice—not an obligation created by guilt. Maybe the healthiest solution is to stop being their ATM and let them learn to respect my “no.”Am I Their Daughter or Just Their Personal ATM?
