My Siblings Called Me a Monster—Then Dad Thrived in the Nursing Home

My dad’s dementia had become dangerous. He was leaving the stove on, wandering at night, and forgetting where he was. I begged my brother and sister to help by taking turns, contributing to his care, or simply visiting him sometimes. They refused, told me I was overreacting, and said that because I lived closest, I should handle everything myself.

So I made the painful decision to move Dad into a nursing home where he could be monitored and cared for around the clock. My siblings immediately turned against me, calling me a monster and accusing me of abandoning our father. I cried for days, wondering if I had made the wrong decision despite knowing I couldn’t keep him safe alone.

Then, a week later, the nursing home called. The nurse sounded amazed because Dad was eating full meals, sleeping through the night, joking with other residents, and happily participating in activities. She told me they rarely saw such a positive turnaround so quickly. For the first time in weeks, I felt a little relief instead of guilt.

My siblings suddenly became eager to visit and demanded the facility’s address, but even after seeing Dad happy and safe, they continued insisting he should have stayed home. Watching him laugh with the staff while they criticized my decision was surreal. I still feel guilty sometimes, but deep down I know the truth: I didn’t abandon my dad—I was the only one willing to step up when he needed help.
