I Never Realized What My Sister Gave Up for Me Until It Was Too Late

For most of my life, I believed my older sister represented everything I wanted to escape. We grew up with very little, and while I spent my time studying and dreaming of a better future, she worked long hours cleaning to help support our family.
When I received my college acceptance letter, I felt proud of the life ahead of me. My sister was one of the first people to call and congratulate me. Instead of appreciating her love, I said something I would regret forever. I told her that cleaning was all she knew how to do.

She became silent for a moment before saying she only wanted me to know how proud she was. I ended the call without realizing it would be our last conversation.
Months later, I learned that my sister had passed away because of an undiagnosed heart condition. At her funeral, I expected only sadness, but I discovered a side of her I had never truly understood.

People came to share stories about her kindness, generosity, and the way she always helped others. Many told me how often she spoke about me and how proud she was of my achievements.
After the service, my aunt revealed a truth that changed everything. My scholarship had not covered all my education costs. My sister had secretly paid the rest by working extra jobs, selling her belongings, and making sacrifices she never told me about.
She had done everything quietly because she wanted me to focus on my future without carrying the burden of knowing what she had given up.

My aunt then handed me a letter my sister had written. In it, she apologized if she had ever made me feel ashamed of our past and explained that seeing me reach opportunities she never had was her greatest happiness.
She ended the letter with the same words from our final call: she was proud of me.
That day, I understood the truth I had failed to see. The person I judged the most was the person who believed in me the most.
