When “Finding Gold” in Her Knees Was Anything But a Treasure

A 65-year-old woman in South Korea, who had endured years of persistent knee pain due to severe joint wear and tear, turned to alternative therapy after conventional anti-inflammatory medications failed to bring relief and caused gastrointestinal issues. When her pain eventually worsened, doctors took X-rays to investigate the affected joints. The resulting medical images revealed an astonishing sight: hundreds of tiny, gold-colored threads embedded throughout both of her knee joints, creating a visual effect that physicians likened to a literal “gold mine.”

The New England Journal of Medicine documented that these metallic strands were not naturally occurring, but were instead the result of a specialized form of long-term acupuncture. In this specific procedure, short pieces of sterile gold wire are intentionally inserted into muscle and joint tissues. The underlying belief of this practice is that leaving the metal permanently in place provides continuous stimulation to the area, offering ongoing relief for chronic pain when standard medical treatments fall short.

However, leaving foreign metal fragments inside human tissue carries significant medical risks that often outweigh the intended benefits. The human body frequently reacts to foreign objects, which can trigger localized inflammation, infection, or the formation of scar tissue around the wires. Furthermore, these embedded strands can irritate surrounding cartilage and muscles, and in some cases, the small metal pieces can migrate to other parts of the body, causing further tissue damage.

Beyond physical irritation, the presence of these permanent metal implants severely complicates future medical evaluations and diagnoses. The vast array of bright metal threads on X-rays creates dense visual obstructions that make it exceptionally difficult for radiographers to clearly examine joint health or detect worsening arthritis. Additionally, having metal embedded deep within the body can prevent patients from safely undergoing crucial diagnostic imaging tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans.

This striking case serves as a critical reminder of the potential long-term complications associated with alternative medical procedures that leave foreign objects inside the body. While managing chronic joint pain requires comprehensive care, patients are strongly advised to consult qualified healthcare providers before trying unproven methods. Understanding the risks, benefits, and long-term implications of any treatment is essential for protecting future mobility and health.
