….The Ultimate Guide to Fresh Sheets: How Often You Should Really Wash Your Bedding for Cleaner Sleep and Healthier Skin

For most people, washing bed sheets about once a week is the recommended routine. Over the course of several nights, sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and allergens that can affect both comfort and hygiene. However, some situations call for more frequent washing. If

you sweat heavily, sleep with pets, eat in bed, have allergies or asthma, live with a skin condition like eczema, or are recovering from an illness, washing your sheets every three to four days is a better choice. On the other hand, if you shower before bed, sleep alone, keep pets off the bed, and maintain a clean bedroom, a weekly wash is generally sufficient.

Keeping your bedding clean involves more than just washing the sheets. Pillowcases should be laundered every three to seven days, particularly for people with oily skin or allergies. Blankets typically need washing every two to four weeks, while duvet covers should be cleaned every one to two weeks. Comforters and duvets protected by a cover usually only require washing every two to three months.

Washable pillows should be cleaned every four to six months, and mattress protectors every one to two months—or sooner if spills or accidents occur. Regular cleaning helps reduce dust mites, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, and odors, creating a fresher and healthier sleep environment.

Simple habits can help bedding stay cleaner between washes. Showering before bed, removing makeup, avoiding food in the bedroom, and allowing the bed to air out for a few minutes each morning all reduce the buildup of dirt and moisture. Keeping pets off the mattress when possible and vacuuming the mattress occasionally can also help maintain cleanliness. Always follow the care instructions on bedding labels, using the recommended water temperature and ensuring everything is completely dry before remaking the bed. For most households, washing sheets once a week offers the ideal balance between cleanliness, comfort, and convenience.
