Never heard of this…

When a child suddenly complains of an itchy or tingly tongue after eating strawberries, it’s often a form of food allergy called Oral Allergy Syndrome, not an automatic sign of a severe, life-threatening reaction. In OAS, the immune system confuses proteins in fresh strawberries with similar proteins in pollens, causing brief itching or mild swelling in the mouth, lips, or tongue that usually fades quickly once the food is swallowed or removed.

Parents can lower risk and anxiety by pausing raw strawberries and trying cooked or processed versions, like jam or baked goods, which are less likely to trigger symptoms. Watching for red flags—trouble breathing, spreading hives, vomiting, or worsening swelling—helps you know when to seek urgent care.

An allergist can confirm what’s happening, explain pollen–fruit cross-reactions, and create a clear plan so your child can enjoy food while you stay calm, prepared, and in control.
