The flowers from my twin sister Emily’s funeral were still fresh when I first heard her husband Daniel’s words echo in my mind: that the baby should be saved, and that Emily no longer mattered. Emily died giving birth at twenty-nine, leaving behind her newborn daughter, Sophie, and a silence that shattered my life. But when he slid custody documents across my kitchen table, I calmly slid my own folder forward instead.
