Wheel of Fortune’ Player Wins $66,000 After Solving This Tough Puzzle

Wheel of Fortune viewers were left uneasy this week after host Ryan Seacrest made a joke about murder during the popular game show. The comment came while chatting with contestant Robin, a self-proclaimed true crime fan from Mt. Prospect, Illinois.

Robin, who enjoys thrifting and prides herself on solving cases within 15 minutes of watching a documentary or listening to a podcast, solved the first toss-up for $1,000. She competed against Jeremy Soria from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Kim Fasano from Stony Point, New York, on the March 9 episode. Robin also captured the second toss-up, bringing her early total to $3,000.

Fasano, who runs a pizza club, got on the board by solving “Sweet, Salty, Sour, Savory” for $1,800. She surged ahead with $5,200 after correctly answering “My Nickname in Grade School.” Robin regained the lead later in the game, solving “Soaking Up Some Rays” for a trip to Mexico and a total score of $21,050.

Soria finally scored after successfully completing two of the three Triple Toss-ups, ending the night with $11,600 after solving the final puzzle, “Going to Pilates.” Fasano left with $7,200, while Robin emerged as the big winner with $21,050, moving on to the Bonus Round under the category “Phrase.”

It was during the Bonus Round interview that controversy erupted. Seacrest asked Robin about the latest case she had solved. She mentioned a Dateline special involving a missing young woman whose boyfriend was the killer. Seacrest responded with a warning joke: “Be careful of those boyfriends. Watch out!” He then asked her twin sister, Rosalyn, if she had a boyfriend. She replied “No” and playfully wiped her brow, prompting Seacrest to say, “Smart.”

The exchange drew immediate criticism online. Reddit users called the joke “inappropriate” and “bad taste,” noting that joking about a real-life murder case was insensitive to victims and their families. One user wrote, “They really should have cut that part out — Ryan shouldn’t have mentioned it at all.” Others agreed, highlighting how true crime obsessions can cross a line when treated like entertainment.

Not all viewers were offended, however. Some fans urged others not to overreact, reminding them it was a lighthearted moment on a game show.

Robin went on to successfully solve her Bonus Round puzzle, “He is Beaming With Joy,” securing an additional $45,000. Her final total for the night reached an impressive $66,050.

The episode shows how even a family-friendly game show can spark debate when sensitive topics collide with on-air humor.
