A Wheel of Fortune competitor gave viewers one of the season’s most memorable reactions after a shocking Bonus Round win left him stunned—and resulted in a briefly surprising interaction with host Ryan Seacrest.
What began as a standard broadcast rapidly transformed into captivating TV as a news reporter from Kentucky grasped that he had just won over $74,000 on the popular American game show.
The broadcast, which aired on January 23, highlighted three contestants from different parts of the country. Chad Hedrick, a veteran local TV reporter based in Lexington, Kentucky, competed against Michelle Hutson-Crawford from Pflugerville, Texas, and Rudy Dinglas of Fallston, Maryland.
Hedrick, an admitted country music fanatic who went to around 20 concerts throughout Kentucky the previous year, displayed early confidence. Even though he buzzed in first during the initial toss-up, Hutson-Crawford—who works as a professional baker—jumped in with the right answer to secure the first $1,000.
Hedrick swiftly rebounded by figuring out the subsequent puzzle, boosting his score by $2,000 and proving he was a formidable competitor.
Dinglas then took his turn in the spotlight. The Maryland resident, who remarkably visited 14 distinct ice cream parlors in one summer, solved the first complete puzzle under the “Serves, Returns & Volleys” category, taking home $1,800.
The game’s momentum pivoted once more in the crossword round. Hedrick successfully guessed a series of positive emotions—joy, delight, glee, and jubilant—catapulting him into first place with $3,000.
The competition grew fierce when Dinglas solved a travel-centric puzzle, winning a vacation to Croatia, elevating his overall winnings to $13,455, and placing him solidly in the lead.
However, the night ultimately belonged to Hedrick.
With just a few letters revealed in the Triple Toss-Ups, he amazed the crowd and his fellow players alike by nailing all three puzzles consecutively. This spectacular streak added $10,000 to his bank, putting him in a near-tie as they approached the final round.
The final puzzle almost threw everything off track.
Hedrick endured a rough patch spinning the wheel, striking “Lose a Turn” two times before eventually hitting “Bankrupt.” When he finally secured $600, he capitalized on the opportunity. With a mere four T’s showing, he boldly answered “Catch-Twenty-Two,” winning $6,400 and securing his victory with a total of $19,400.
Host Ryan Seacrest was even taken by surprise.
“I didn’t even finish what I was saying,” Seacrest noted when Hedrick eagerly chimed in with the right response.
Hutson-Crawford departed with $1,000, and Dinglas closely missed the top spot despite a strong finish of $13,455.
Moving into the Bonus Round, Hedrick brought his mother, Leslie, and his sister, Holly, onto the stage. He opted for the “Around the House” category, banking on a recognizable phrase.
Once the board provided the default letters—R, S, T, L, N, and E—Hedrick picked B, F, K, and A. The puzzle subsequently revealed: “_ FF BLANKET.”
He made his guess.
“A fluffy blanket… a puffy blanket?” he ventured. The guess was absolutely right—and pure excitement ensued.
Hedrick froze in his tracks, placing his hands on his head in utter shock.
“You doing okay?” Seacrest inquired.
“You’re joking,” the player shot back, unable to believe the reality of the moment.
When Seacrest opened the envelope to unveil a $55,000 prize, an incredulous Hedrick playfully nudged the host’s arm, repeating his disbelief with a joyous laugh.
As the final total of $74,400 was announced, the magnitude of his win finally became real. When questioned about why he appeared so rattled, Hedrick confessed that sheer panic had temporarily taken control.
Still trying to digest the massive victory, he summarized his feelings plainly:
“I’m speechless—and that almost never happens.”
For devoted followers of Wheel of Fortune, it was exactly the type of genuine, unscripted emotion that elevates a standard broadcast into television go
