Meghan Markle Turns Heads After Revealing She’s Changed Her Name

Meghan Markle is turning the page on a familiar chapter of her public life — and taking a new family name with her.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed she is no longer using “Markle” as her last name, instead choosing to go simply by “Sussex,” aligning herself with Prince Harry and their two children, Archie and Lilibet. The move, she says, is deeply personal and rooted in motherhood, not royal protocol.

The announcement surfaced during an episode of With Love, Meghan, her upcoming Netflix series, when actress and comedian Mindy Kaling casually referred to her as “Meghan Markle.” Meghan quickly, but warmly, corrected her — a moment that has since sparked widespread conversation online.

Laughing gently, Meghan pointed out the slip, noting that she now goes by Sussex, and added that carrying the same last name as her children has become far more meaningful to her than she ever anticipated. What once seemed like a small detail, she said, has grown into something far more meaningful.

For Meghan, the name change represents unity. “This is our family name,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of having a shared identity with her children. As a mother, she said, the connection feels especially significant — something she didn’t fully appreciate until she had kids of her own.

In a separate interview with People magazine, Meghan doubled down on the sentiment, noting that motherhood reshaped how she views even the smallest symbols of family. The name “Sussex,” she explained, reflects the bond she shares with Harry, Archie, and Lilibet — their “little family,” as she described it.

While it remains to be seen whether the public will widely adopt “Meghan Sussex,” the decision underscores yet another step away from her past — including her strained relationship with her father, Thomas Markle. The duchess has been publicly estranged from him for years, and the choice to drop her maiden name may further cement that distance.

Since their 2018 wedding, Meghan and Prince Harry have charted an unconventional course, stepping back from royal duties and eventually settling in Montecito, California. The couple has focused on building a quieter life centered on raising their children, away from the constant scrutiny of the British royal spotlight.

Their children’s titles have also evolved. Archie and Lilibet were originally known as Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor. After King Charles III ascended the throne, they became Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex — making “Sussex” not just a symbolic choice, but an official family identifier.

The name change arrives just as Meghan prepares to reintroduce herself to audiences through With Love, Meghan, which is set to premiere this week on Netflix after being postponed due to devastating wildfires in Southern California. The lifestyle-focused series features celebrity guests, home and wellness tips, and personal reflections, offering viewers a curated glimpse into Meghan’s life behind the gates of the Sussex household.

For Meghan, the shift from “Markle” to “Sussex” isn’t about reinvention — it’s about belonging. And as she continues to carve out her post-royal identity in America, one thing is clear: family remains at the center of the story she wants to tell.
