A New Jersey family made a shocking discovery when an eight-foot Burmese python weighing about 40 pounds was found beneath their backyard shed in Freehold. The snake had recently swallowed a large opossum, which was confirmed by an X-ray and explained the huge bulge in its body. Animal control officers had to remove floorboards and carefully free the python, which was found in good condition despite being wedged beneath the shed. Because Burmese pythons are not native to New Jersey, officials suspected it had been an exotic pet that was released or abandoned, and it was eventually placed with a qualified reptile specialist.
