Ever wondered why your car’s fuel door is sometimes on the opposite side from the gas pump? There is no universal rule requiring fuel fillers to be on one particular side. Automakers choose the location based on factors such as the fuel tank, exhaust, suspension, wiring, safety, engineering, and manufacturing design.
The fuel-filler neck must also fit efficiently between the fuel door and tank while maintaining proper crash protection and heat management. Because every vehicle has different engineering requirements, the fuel door can be on either side.
