Count the Circles Viral Personality Puzzle Tests Your Perception

A viral visual test has been making the rounds online with a provocative claim: “The number of circles you see will tell you if you are a narcissist.” The image looks like a hypnotic pattern of overlapping circles, and viewers are challenged to count how many they can distinguish. The task sounds simple, but people often produce different answers. Some immediately notice the largest circles, while others focus on smaller rings and overlapping boundaries. A few viewers even change their answer after staring at the image longer.

That difference is what makes the puzzle interesting. Our brains don’t simply record everything our eyes see. They organize shapes, patterns, and boundaries based on attention, expectations, and context. Two people can examine the same image while noticing completely different features first. However, the connection to narcissism should be treated as entertainment, not psychology. Counting circles cannot diagnose narcissism or reliably determine someone’s personality. Narcissism is a complex trait that cannot be measured by a simple optical puzzle shared on social media.

Even the number of circles someone sees can change for ordinary reasons. Screen size, image quality, eyesight, lighting, concentration, and the amount of time spent looking can all influence perception. People may also use different rules for deciding what counts as a separate circle. If you want to solve the puzzle more carefully, start at the outer edge and trace each complete circular boundary toward the center. Then examine overlapping areas for shapes you may have missed. Looking away briefly and returning can also help reset your attention.

The viral claim works because it turns an ordinary visual challenge into a personal question: “What does my answer say about me?” That invitation to self-reflection makes people more likely to participate, compare answers, and share the result with friends.Ultimately, the most interesting lesson isn’t whether you see three circles or ten. It’s how differently human perception can work. Count the circles, compare your method with others, and enjoy the puzzle—but remember that an optical illusion can reveal something about how you look at an image, not whether you’re a narcissist.
