If you spot a purple stripe painted on a fence, tree, post, or other property marker in parts of the United States, it may be more than just an unusual splash of color. In several states, purple paint can serve as a legal alternative to a traditional “No Trespassing” sign, warning people that the land is privately owned and that entering without permission may be prohibited.

The markings are often used because paint can be easier for property owners to maintain than signs, especially on large rural properties, wooded areas, farms, and hunting land.
