Please help! My father was just bitten by this bug in our home. We don’t know what it is. Is it dangerous?

Summer brings longer days, sunshine, and warmer temperatures, but it can also bring an increase in insects that people may not expect to encounter. Among them are assassin bugs, a group of insects that includes species capable of transmitting the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. Although not every assassin bug carries the parasite, certain species can pose a health concern in areas where Chagas disease occurs.

A bite itself may cause irritation or other mild symptoms, but infection with the parasite can sometimes lead to symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, or swelling. In some cases, the acute stage may be mild or go unnoticed, allowing the infection to remain undetected for years. Chronic Chagas disease can potentially affect the heart and digestive system and, in serious cases, lead to significant complications.

Assassin bugs can be found in a variety of outdoor environments, including gardens, woodpiles, porches, sheds, and areas around homes. They may also enter buildings through small openings, especially where insects or other food sources are present. Keeping outdoor spaces tidy, reducing piles of wood and debris, and sealing cracks around doors, windows, and walls can help reduce opportunities for these insects to enter living spaces.

Because Chagas disease is relatively uncommon in many parts of the United States, simply seeing an assassin bug does not mean someone has been exposed to the parasite. Still, avoiding direct contact with unfamiliar insects and taking basic precautions around the home can be worthwhile. A clean outdoor area, properly sealed openings, and awareness of local insect species can all help make summer activities safer and more comfortable.
