The laundry room showdown: can you wash kitchen towels and bath towels together??

Kitchen towels and bath towels may look like harmless laundry companions, but they can carry very different types of dirt. Kitchen towels are often used for spills, greasy surfaces, food preparation, and sometimes contact with raw meat. Because of this, they can collect food bacteria and grease. Bath towels, meanwhile, mainly absorb moisture, body oils, and dead skin after showers.

The good news is that washing them together is not automatically a hygiene disaster. “your washing machine doesn’t care where the towel came from!” With a good detergent, an appropriate warm or hot cycle, and thorough drying, a washing machine can effectively clean both types of towels. The important part is making sure the machine is not overloaded, so water and detergent can circulate properly.

There is one major exception: kitchen towels that have touched raw poultry, pork, or beef. These should be washed separately from bath towels because raw meat can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of cross-contamination. Heavily greasy kitchen towels may also benefit from their own load.

Another simple rule is to avoid stuffing the washing machine. When towels are packed too tightly, they may not get properly cleaned. If you want an easy system, keeping separate hampers for kitchen cloths, bath towels, and bedding can also make laundry day simpler.
So, do kitchen and bath towels need separate loads every time? Not necessarily. “Washing kitchen towels and bath towels together is NOT an automatic disaster IF they are washed properly with good detergent and warm/hot water.” However, separating towels exposed to raw meat or heavy grease is the safer choice.
