If A Snake Bites You, Don’t Make This Common Mistake… See more

Any snake bite should be treated as a medical emergency, even if the snake does not appear dangerous. The first step is to call emergency medical services and keep the person as calm and still as possible to help slow the spread of venom.

The affected limb should generally be kept still and positioned around heart level or lower while waiting for medical help. Remove rings, watches, bracelets, tight clothing, or other items near the bite because swelling can develop quickly.

It is important to avoid dangerous traditional remedies that can make the injury worse. Never cut the skin around the bite, attempt to suck out the venom, or apply a tight tourniquet. These methods do not safely remove venom and can cause additional tissue damage.

Instead, focus on getting professional medical treatment as quickly as possible. If it can be done safely, remember the snake’s appearance or take a photograph from a safe distance, but never attempt to catch or handle it.
