Saw this huge wasp crawling slowly on my curtains inside. It looks groggy and isn’t flying much. Is there a nest inside my walls?

Finding a large wasp crawling inside your home can be alarming, but seeing one does not necessarily mean there is a hidden nest nearby. Wasps can accidentally find their way indoors through open windows, doors, small cracks, vents, and other openings around the house.

They can also enter unnoticed on clothing, bags, firewood, or other items brought inside. This is especially common toward the end of the warm season, when wasps may become more active around homes while searching for food, shelter, or a suitable place to escape cooler temperatures.

If you find a single wasp indoors, there is usually no reason to assume that an entire colony is living inside your walls. However, repeatedly seeing wasps in the same area may be a reason to inspect nearby openings, roof spaces, wall cavities, or other potential nesting locations.

Keeping windows and doors screened, sealing cracks and gaps, and checking items before bringing them indoors can help reduce the chances of wasps getting inside. If you discover a large number of wasps or an active nest, it is safest to avoid disturbing it and contact a qualified pest professional.
