Always Keep the Bathroom Light On When Sleeping in a Hotel

Leaving a soft bathroom or hallway light on while sleeping in an unfamiliar place can provide a simple sense of orientation and comfort. In a hotel, guest room, or someone else’s home, unfamiliar surroundings can make it harder to navigate during the night. A gentle light can help you recognize where you are and make the room feel more familiar.

The small amount of illumination can also make nighttime trips to the bathroom safer. It may help you see furniture, bags, shoes, or other obstacles that could otherwise be difficult to notice in complete darkness. For older adults or anyone who is unsteady when getting out of bed, having a softly lit path can be especially helpful in reducing the chance of trips or falls.

Some claims suggest that sleeping with a light on can protect vascular health or prevent purple-colored blotches from appearing on the skin. However, these claims are not well established by scientific evidence. The more reasonable benefit is simply that a low, warm light can create a safer and more comfortable environment when you need to move around during the night.

For the best balance between safety and sleep, the light should be dim rather than bright. A small night-light placed near the bathroom or along the hallway can provide enough visibility without strongly illuminating the bedroom. This simple habit can make an unfamiliar space feel more secure while helping you move around confidently if you wake up during the night.
