The Delivery Boy Who Had No One Left..

At 11 p.m., I ordered pizza and opened the door to a delivery boy who looked barely 17 and was shaking uncontrollably. He quietly told me that his mother had died only two hours earlier. I invited him inside, gave him some water, and let him use the bathroom when he asked. He stayed there for a long time, and when he finally came out, he simply said, “We’ll meet again,” before rushing away.

A few minutes later, I went inside and froze when I noticed writing on my bathroom mirror: “You’re the only person other than my mom who showed me kindness. I hope your kids know how lucky they are!” Two days later, an unknown number called. It was St. Mary’s Hospital. They had found my number in Tom’s phone under “kind stranger.” Tom had collapsed at work from grief and exhaustion, and his emergency contact was still listed as his mother—even though she was gone.

I went to the hospital that afternoon with food. Tom smiled when he saw me and thanked me, not for the meal, but for reminding him of his mother. He whispered, “I knew we’d meet again. I just never thought it would be like this.” I held his hand and reassured him. He had no siblings or relatives to turn to, so I realized that this lonely young man needed someone to keep showing up.

Since then, I have checked on Tom every week with a call or message, and he has even met my son and daughter, who are close to his age. We aren’t related, but somehow he became part of our lives. I learned that compassion doesn’t always require a grand gesture—it can be as simple as offering a glass of water, giving a grieving teenager a safe place to fall apart, and choosing to keep showing up after everyone else has gone. Sometimes one small act of kindness can become the beginning of a family you never expected.
