Cockroach milk” sounds like a joke, but it refers to a real nutrient-rich secretion produced by Diploptera punctata, also known as the Pacific beetle cockroach. Unlike most cockroaches, this species gives birth to live young.
The developing embryos consume a secretion from their mother. Inside their bodies, the nutrients form concentrated crystals that slowly release protein, fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids as the embryos grow.
Scientists became interested because these crystals are extremely energy-dense and contain a combination of important nutrients. Some research has suggested that they contain more than three times the energy of the same weight of dairy milk.
However, this does not mean cockroach milk is healthier than cow’s milk or that people should drink it. The comparison refers mainly to energy density, not overall nutritional value or suitability for humans.

The most important value may be what scientists can learn from these unusual crystals. They could eventually inspire new nutritional ingredients or biotechnology applications.
So while cockroach milk probably won’t replace your morning glass of milk anytime soon, the science behind it is surprisingly real—and much more complicated than the viral headlines suggest.
