The journey of self-improvement is often anything but linear. It\u2019s winding, unpredictable, and deeply personal. When I first stepped onto the path of self-development, I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information\u2014countless ideologies, frameworks, and philosophies, each promising healing, transformation, and inner peace.<\/p>\n
Some of it was profound. Some of it was performative. I devoured it all anyway.<\/p>\n
From academic research and professional training to blog posts and YouTube deep dives, I became an enthusiastic student of personal growth. But over time\u2014nearly a decade, in fact\u2014what really stuck with me wasn\u2019t any one method or guru\u2019s advice. It was the simple but radical idea of choosing myself, every single day.<\/p>\n
And let me be clear: choosing myself did not come naturally.<\/p>\n
For years, self-betrayal felt like second nature. I knew what was best for me\u2014my mind made that loud and clear\u2014but something always stopped me from acting on it. Guilt. Conditioning. Fear. It took years of fumbling forward to learn how to replace that habit with one that actually honored my potential.<\/p>\n
Here are the four ways I\u2019ve learned to choose myself\u2014consistently, imperfectly, and with love.<\/p>\n
1. I choose myself by learning and re-learning my happiness equation.<\/p>\n
At some point, I stopped assuming happiness was something I\u2019d stumble upon. Instead, I started treating it like an equation\u2014specific elements that, when combined, made me feel aligned and whole.<\/p>\n
For me, those ingredients include creativity (as both an artist and a writer), movement in nature, a clean living space, regular meditation, and hydration. These aren\u2019t extravagant or revolutionary, but they\u2019re essential to my well-being. They sustain me far more than fleeting joys like dessert or a flirty text ever could.<\/p>\n
And like any good equation, mine changes over time. What once lit me up may not always work. That\u2019s why I journal. That\u2019s why I sit quietly in meditation. That\u2019s why I ask myself, often, what do I need now?<\/p>\n
This self-awareness has become a compass. It brings me home when the world gets loud.<\/p>\n
2. I choose myself by practicing discipline\u2014gently but firmly.<\/p>\n
This one took the longest. For years, I resisted discipline, equating it with rigidity and repression. I feared it would suffocate my creativity. But eventually, I realized discipline wasn\u2019t my enemy\u2014it was my anchor.<\/p>\n
Being disciplined allows me to keep promises to myself. It turns intention into action. It builds self-trust, which, for someone who once chronically self-abandoned, is everything.<\/p>\n
And here\u2019s the best part: the rewards compound. A day of discipline becomes a week. A week becomes a month. Suddenly, I look around and see the proof\u2014calmer mornings, clearer thoughts, stronger boundaries. Not because I forced myself, but because I cared enough to follow through.<\/p>\n
Discipline, I\u2019ve learned, is a love language too.<\/p>\n
3. I choose myself by honoring the past, without living in it.<\/p>\n
My childhood wasn\u2019t easy. And in my early 20s, I realized that if I didn\u2019t confront it, I\u2019d be doomed to repeat it\u2014subconsciously playing out old patterns I didn\u2019t even realize I\u2019d inherited.<\/p>\n
So I went deep. Therapy, inner child work, reparenting. I did the bulk of my healing. But triggers still come. Memories still surface. And the challenge now is: how long do I stay with them?<\/p>\n
Sometimes the answer is five minutes. Sometimes it\u2019s a week of reflection. What matters most is that I stay intuitive and compassionate with myself, while also staying grounded in the present. The goal is no longer to fix the past\u2014but to ensure it doesn\u2019t rob me of the future.<\/p>\n
4. I choose myself by being rooted in who I am\u2014regardless of what happens around me.<\/p>\n
This is my most recent (and maybe most liberating) practice: refusing to let the world define me.<\/p>\n
My identity is not my job title. It\u2019s not my productivity. It\u2019s not whether someone likes me, or how many clients I book, or how much money I make in a month.<\/p>\n
For a long time, I measured my worth through performance and validation. But now? Now I build self-assurance from the inside. So when things go wrong, I don\u2019t spiral. When things go beautifully, I savor it without needing to cling.<\/p>\n
Life is unpredictable. But I don\u2019t have to be.<\/p>\n
Choosing myself\u2014daily, actively, wholeheartedly\u2014has become the greatest act of self-love I\u2019ve ever known. And it\u2019s something I\u2019ll keep learning to do better, again and again.<\/p>\n
