\nThe young soldier \u2013 known now as the visionary leader of the Five Satins \u2013 had just spent a weekend with \u201cthe girl of [his] dreams\u201d and couldn\u2019t shake her from his mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were other nights that we spent together,\u201d the late singer told Smithsonian Magazine in 2004. \u201cBut there\u2019s only one first time.\u201d
\n\u201cWhen I arrived at camp, I went straight to the day room. There was a piano there and I started playing the chord in my head and the words in my heart. Before I realized it, it was time to go to guard duty. It was a cold, black night, and the stars were twinkling. The setting was very apropos for my feelings and emotions,\u201d added Parris, who died in 2022 at 85.

\n\u201cBecause we did it at the church,\u201d Parris said in a 2013 interview with the Florida radio show \u201cDoo Wop Revival,\u201d \u201cI think the song was blessed. And so was I\u2026it lasted a long, long time\u201d
\nUnfortunately, the song lasted longer than Parris\u2019 relationship with Marla.
