The actor and former U.S. Congressman who played Cooter Davenport on the hit series The Dukes of Hazzard has died at the age of 84, closing the chapter on a life that bridged television stardom and national public service in a way few ever manage. Before he ever ran for office, Ben Jones was already a familiar face to millions as Hazzard County’s reliable, friendly mechanic, appearing across seven seasons of the classic show and turning Cooter into one of the most beloved figures in pop-culture history. His charismatic performance made the character a symbol of down-to-earth good humor and dependability, helping define the tone and appeal of the long-running series and anchoring its vision of small-town community. That enduring popularity laid the foundation for a public life that would eventually extend far beyond television, giving Jones a platform that few character actors attain.

After his success on The Dukes of Hazzard, Jones transitioned from entertainment into national politics, moving from the set to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to Congress, where he served two terms representing Georgia’s 4th congressional district, bringing his name and reputation from prime-time television into public office. Even while he took on the responsibilities of national service, Jones remained connected to his creative roots, continuing to work as a writer, commentator, and musician in his later years. Friends, family, and fans around the world are now mourning the loss of a figure described as a true American original. Ben Jones leaves behind a distinctive legacy that linked Hollywood, southern culture, and national public service, ensuring he will be remembered both for his iconic role as Cooter Davenport and for his time in Congress.
