At first glance, this unusual orange creature looks soft, fluffy, and almost harmless. However, it may be a puss caterpillar, one of the most venomous caterpillars found in North America. Its beautiful fur-like appearance hides tiny venomous spines that can cause painful reactions.

Experts warn people never to touch unfamiliar caterpillars, even if they look harmless. Contact with a puss caterpillar can cause intense burning pain, swelling, redness, and other unpleasant symptoms. In some cases, the reaction can be severe enough to require medical attention.

These caterpillars can sometimes be found on trees, shrubs, and plants around homes and gardens. Parents are encouraged to keep children and pets away from unfamiliar insects. If you discover one in your yard, avoid handling it and seek appropriate professional assistance if necessary.

The biggest lesson is that appearances can be deceiving. What looks like a soft little ball of fur could actually be a creature capable of delivering a painful sting. Remember: never touch an unfamiliar caterpillar with your bare hands!
