That milk you’re about to pour away is money disappearing down the drain, but a freezer can turn it from near-waste into something useful for another meal. Before you stash a jug in the cold, though, a small adjustment can save you from leaks, broken containers, and an unwelcome surprise. Freezing milk helps stretch a grocery budget by making sure bulk purchases don’t go to waste, but it needs room to expand as it freezes. If you plan to freeze a full plastic jug, pour out about one cup first so there is enough space inside the container. Stick with plastic instead of glass, since glass containers could crack during freezing, and consider ice cube trays when you want smaller, ready-to-use portions. For best quality, plan to use frozen milk within about three months.

When it is time to use the milk, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator and allow around 24 hours for a jug to thaw, or longer if the milk is especially solid. Once it has defrosted, give the container a good shake, because freezing can cause the milk to separate and slightly change its texture. Those changes do not have to disrupt your routine, since thawed milk can still be used in coffee, poured over cereal, or added to cooking and baking. With a little preparation before freezing and some patience while it thaws, milk that once seemed destined for the drain becomes a practical ingredient for future meals.
